Our topic this month is about skin care products. With the aesthetic industry in Australia growing each year, there are a plethora of new entrants offering never ending miracle cures with the latest and greatest ingredients.
Take heed, unless there is scientific evidence of the clinical endpoint being achieved, it is more than likely that you will be wasting your money. Even more so if you have to self-diagnose at a retail counter or you select your products based solely on “specials” without advice after a proper skin consultation from a professional practitioner. You do not always get what you pay for.

This is a question nearly all clients ask during their first appointment with a skin care specialist. A lot of the time, there is no comparison. Especially when talking about a paramedical or cosmeceutical Skin Care company. The key differences are:
- Made in small batches to ensure freshness and quality control.
- Highest quality ingredients, to ensure skin safety.
- High concentration of active ingredients in ratio to base ingredients, ensures the best results.
- Ingredient stability. This is a very important point of difference; the active ingredients have been engineered to remain stable during the life of the product. For you, the consumer this means the risk of an adverse reaction or allergy to the products.
- No synthetic fragrances, colours or dyes. This also means a significant reduction in risk of allergic reactions or irritation to the skin.
- Sunscreens with a proven SPF rating, that offers superior protection against UV damage.
- Nourishing, with a focus on maintaining skins integrity.
Over the counter brands
- Produced in large batches, meaning the ration of preservatives is a lot higher because they need a longer shelf life.
- Low quality active ingredients. This means that the moisturiser you have brought is not able to penetrate through the skin and will not provide any sort of benefit.
- Low concentration of active ingredients to base ingredients. For a company to advertise a product with special ingredients (for example, peptides or hyaluronic acid), they may be in there but in such a low concentration that they have no effect on the skin. Or, the molecular structure of the ingredient is too large to penetrate the skin.
- Contains synthetic fragrances, colours and dyes. Significantly increases risk of allergic reaction or irritation on the skin.
- Low quality sunscreen with no regulation to SPF rating. Leaves you with inadequate sun protection even though you have slathered it on.
- Harsh, stripping and ends up causing more problems than it remedies.
These are just a few of the key differences between professional and over the counter skin care. Ask any of our skin specialists and I’m sure they can rattle off many more benefits to professional ranges.
