Firstly, let’s kick off with how Laser Hair Removal actually works!
Laser hair removal works by the use of a laser that emits light that is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) within the hair follicle.
The light energy is converted into heat, which damages the hair follicle and reduces hair growth.
The stages of Hair Growth:

Who is a good candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
All skin types can be treated as long as the correct technology is used.Β Light skin or dark skin – it doesn’t matter. As long as the hair colour is dark.
We can’t stress enough the importance of using the right technology coupled with properly trained and qualified technicians. If incorrect settings or equipment is used, the treatment can actually deliver the opposite outcome – hair growth can be stimulated or worse still, the skin pigmentation could be damaged forever!
The thickness of the hair will determine the number of treatments required to reduce hair growth. Generally, 6 to 8 sessions are required to achieve 80% hair reduction. Results do vary from person to person but most should expect to be on the low side when the best equipment and correct settings are being used.
Who can’t be treated?
If you have blonde, red, orange or white/grey hair, you are not an ideal candidate for Laser Hair Removal and you should consider alternatives such as:
alkaline hair removal.
Don’t let anyone make you promises of effective laser hair removal – the laser light is attracted to dark pigment (black ideally) the lighter shades simply do not absorb the light as darker hair does.
Alkaline hair removal is a painless and permanent option to Laser Hair Removal that can be offered in some instances. It is often used on facial vellus hair and light coloured fine hair. We provide DMK Alkaline hair removal.
What do we need to do BEFORE laser hair removal? (Pre-care)
Remember, laser light is attracted to the darker pigmentation in the hair. We need to avoid any added “pigmentation” thus:
- No use of fake tan β should be exfoliated off.
- No Recent sun exposure for 4 weeks prior to appointment.
- No light sensitive medication!
We also need to see the stage and coverage of the hair growth to make sure we get total coverage with the treatment:
- No waxing or plucking for four weeks before the appointment.
- Shaving is required prior to the appointment.
And if you have a darker skin type, we may prescribe a product for you to use before your treatment to make sure we get the best results for you.
What do we need to do AFTER laser hair removal? (Post-care)
What you do after to care for the treated areas is very important to make sure you get a good outcome both in terms of hair reduction and caring for the skin.
- Application of soothing gel for 3-5 days post treatment
- Exfoliate from the day 5 post.
- No waxing or plucking of the hairs.
- Shaving permitting after the redness has faded.
- No sun exposure in between treatments in your package and non for at least four weeks after your final treatment.
